Status of English speaking skills in Turkish ELT departments: A nationwide survey

چکیده

The situation of spoken English in both formal and informal settings Turkey seems to be far from satisfactory. Additionally, the legal arrangements devoted ameliorate this predicament have proven unsuccessful as an acceptable level competence is concerned. present study aimed investigate speaking skills at Language Teaching (ELT) departments Turkey, attempts attain a descriptive outline for problems, perceptions, needs, solutions proposed by lecturers pre-service teachers. To achieve this, questionnaire semi-structured interview were administered teachers seven ELT across with one department each geographical regions. results indicated that although they had been studying more than 6 years, great majority participants could not speak proficiently supposed do. It was also revealed difficulty achieving fluency maintaining confidence when mainly because no appropriate contexts would allow them master skills. On other hand, extensive policy change foreign language education most commonly solution.
